The Voice of Truth

“Don’t worry. Be happy.” For some, that phrase is easier said then done. All of us worry at times, but sometimes the “worries” can get the best of us. Who will my child have as his/her teacher next year? What am I going to wear to a big event that makes me look good? Will I get a raise at my job? Some “worries” are even greater. What will I do if I don’t have enough money to pay my mortgage? What will happen to me and my kids if my spouse becomes sick? What if my child has is hurt somehow?

I have to tell you that my biggest worry or fear is flying. Yes, I have flown before ( 2 times to be exact since 2001), but something about it creates great anxiety for me. I worry about the plane being in good working order. I worry that there will be turbulence. I worry that something awful will happen while we are in the air. I could go on and on. I have such a fear of it, that I believe I have panic attacks. Now flying isn’t a worry or fear that I had to confront everyday. So, it was easy to let if go. I didn’t have to think about it because when was I ever going to need to fly. For some reason my need to confront this fear/worry kept coming up in my mind. I know that fear comes from Satan, so one day I decided to act on that little voice urging me to face my fear/worry. I decided to seek the counsel of a Christian aunt who has dealt with fear. She sent me a list of Bible verses to combat my fear. The Bible says that Jesus used God’s word to combat Satan and we should do the same. I carried this list around with me. I memorized the verses and hid them in my heart. All the while thinking ” When was I going to need to use these verses?” I think God was helping to prepare me for my test. Last July, my grandfather passed away suddenly. I was 7 months pregnant and had a 2 year old. There was no way I was going to travel by car to Nashville, Tennessee — a 12 hour drive from where I live. I had one choice — fly. The funeral was scheduled in a matter of days and we had to go. My list traveled with me on the plane. As we boarded the plane, I had my list in hand. I sat in my seat and read that list over and over again. I held onto that list the entire plane ride. Let me just tell you, I had no anxiety on that plane. Praise the Lord! I had such a peace about it all as we were flying. I know that God gave me that peace. Those Bible verses combated Satan and the Lord was victorious! In few weeks, I will be flying to Tennessee for a family wedding. I have been reading my list and already the “peace that passes all understanding” has enveloped me.

Here is my list of verses. I use these verses for the “big worries” and the “little worries.”

Joshua1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

Romands 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height not depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you

Baby Bottles with BPA

There has been questions raised as to the safety of plastic bottles that contain BPA. On April 18, 2008, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams discussed this important issue. You can read about it here. A segment on this show reported that Canada’s health agency has banned some baby bottles from being sold. I had heard about this issue several months ago and decided to purchase glass bottles and training cups for my little one. I purchased these bottles/cups from a company called Born Free. If you do not want to order over the web, they provide a list of retailers that carry their product. Their website contains alot of information on this topic, with links to other media reports. I have been very happy with their product.

Review: The Time Traveler’s Wife

This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with “Chrono Displacement” disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she’d known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time traveling to Clare’s childhood and meeting her as a 6-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare’s points of view, and so does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never knows where or when he’ll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love is his anchor. The expressive, evocative performances of both actors convey the protagonists’ intense relationship, their personal quirks and their reminiscences, making this a fascinating audio. Positive Elements

The Time Traveler’s Wife is an intriguing story about a love that two people share — a love that goes through the strange and unimaginable. I loved both of the central characters in the story. The author developed them well and you had a sense of really knowing them by the end of the story. I liked the way the author followed the lives of both characters at the same time, although it was a little challenging to follow at the beginning.

Sexual Content

This story has a few scenes that are sexual in nature. There was a particular scene that occurred with Clare when she was in high school. She was “attacked” by a male classmate. This may be disturbing to some. Also, adultery occurs in this novel. The other sexual scenes that occur are not graphic in nature and have suitable place in this novel.

Violent Content

There was not any major violence in the book. There was the above mentioned attack as well as Henry beating someone up after time traveling, but it was not graphic.

Profanity

There is profanity throughout this story. Some of the profanity was in the character’s general conversation in relation to sex.

Drug Content

There is little drug content in this book. The drugs that are talked about are related to Henry’s condition and they are medicinal in nature.

Conclusion:

I thought that this story was somewhat confusing at the beginning. It was challenging to follow the time lines of both of the characters. Once you get “into” the book, it becomes easier to follow and understand. I enjoyed reading this novel and all its complexities. Be prepared to spend some time reading this book, though. It is about 500 pages.

Breastfeeding and Jury Duty

Senator Nancy Jacobs is sponsoring a bill in the state of Maryland which would allow breastfeeding mothers to be exempt from jury duty until the child turns 2. You can read more at WBAL or the Maryland State website.

Cloned Meat and Milk

I read an interesting article (“What’s the Beef?” by Ike Wilson) in the January 30th edition of the Frederick News Post. Did you know that the FDA has said that meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring is safe to eat? The FDA is also saying that no special labeling warning consumers is needed. That is pretty scary because there is simply too little data for consumers to be completely confident that eating cloned food is safe. The FDA require labels on food items that tell us how much salt is in a product, but don’t feel that we need to know we are eating a product from a cloned animal. Take a look at the link and read the article in full. Very interesting! All the more reason to eat and buy locally. At least you will know where your food is coming from. I think I will be doing a lot more of this!
